Confused UPSR Parent: Must We Say "Ali is writing a letter with a pen NOW"? |

A reader, Penny, recently wrote to The Star about her confusion on the teacher's instruction to his neighbour's child. The issue is about the latest UPSR format requires that students put in the “time factor” when using -ing and -ed verbs; while they are making sentences with “-ed” (past tense), they must put in a time indicator like “just now”, “yesterday”, “last week”. Read details here. The key message from the reply of this letter is that, while we don't need to put in "time factor" in our sentences, The teacher has to teach pupils with different levels of English proficiency and can’t take for granted that they are all as proficient as your neighbour’s child. Also, teachers have to follow the requirements of the UPSR examination. Perhaps your neighbour should have a chat with her son’s teacher to seek clarification on this matter.
